On the dusty streets of Lesotho, people stare inquisitively at a young woman who carries a wooden cross on her back. She looks back into their faces, at the mystically beautiful landscape, a herd of sheep, and a pair of hands that knit unceasingly. Located midway between documentary, fiction, and experimental film, this beautifully rendered film from self-taught director Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese marks him as an important talent to watch. Taking the form of an extended, poetic letter to the protagonist’s mother and motherland, the film shifts its perspective between Southern African and Germany, where Mosese now lives. This is a brave and powerful film, at once both intimate and alienated, that explores issues of colonialism, shame, whiteness, integration, and liminality, while speaking to the diasporic experience of time and space.
