Meeting Gorbachev

Cleveland Int'l FF 2019 – Nominee: Best Documentary

With the diffident but incisive charm that we have grown to love from Herzog this almost one on one meeting between a giant of cinema and a giant of the Soviet cannot fail to glue one to one’s seat. Collaborating with Andre Singer (whose The Art of Killing is one of the most challenging documentaries ever made) Herzog places himself as centre stage as his eminent subject. The film could as much be Mikhail Gorbachev interviewing Werner Herzog as the other way around. For audiences with little knowledge of the immense turns of history which took place within the Soviet State, the film is an easily digestible but by no means simple introduction to that history.
